Plum Cottage Crafts was established in 1994.  At that time, I
was making bead jewelry for sale at local craft shows.  From
that I expanded into fiber arts and retired from doing craft
shows in 2003.

I occasionally restore antique circular sock machines (CSMs),
make hand-turned socks on CSMs for sale, family and
friends, and machine knit on flatbed and double-bed
machines.

What is 'restoration'?  My dictionary has several definitions:
the one that most applies to my sock machine work is 'a
putting or bringing back into a former, normal, or unimpaired
state or condition'.  In simple terms, I make sure a machine
will leave my shop in full and proper working condition and
guarantee that it will do so.   I do not re-paint the machines, as
I feel it takes away from their historical integrity.  This is also
known as 'mechanical restoration'.

I teach classes by arrangement in using sock machines on a
one-on-one basis.

Over the last several years, I have tried nearly every brand of
sock machine that was manufactured in the US and Canada
(and a few from England), keeping those on which I can make
a range of sized socks to fit almost any feet and selling other
working machines to buyers who want the assurance of
being able to make socks on a machine they know will work.
