Plum Cottage Crafts was established in 1994.  At that time, I
was making bead jewelry for sale at local craft shows.  From
that I expanded into fiber arts and retired from doing craft
shows in 2003.

Currently, I restore antique circular sock machines (CSMs),
make hand-turned socks on CSMs for sale, family and
friends, and machine knit on flatbed and double-bed
machines.

I buy CSMs from time to time, and restore them for sale to
others who would like to knit socks in less time than it takes
to knit them by hand.  The restored CSMs I sell are
guaranteed to be fully functional, and have been thoroughly
tested by making at least one pair of socks.  Pictures are
provided that demonstrate how well the machine will perform.

What is 'restoration'?  My dictionary has several definitions:
the one that most applies to my sock machine work is 'a
putting or bringing back into a former, normal, or unimpaired
state or condition'.  In simple terms, I make sure a machine
will leave my shop in full and proper working condition and
guarantee that it will do so.   I do not re-paint the machines, as
I feel it takes away from their historical integrity.  This is also
known as 'mechanical restoration'.

I offer unlimited technical and emotional support to
experienced and beginning knitters as they learn the skills
needed to make socks on their machines.  I also offer classes
in using the sock machines.

Over the last several years, I have tried nearly every brand of
sock machine that was manufactured in the US and Canada
(and a few from England), keeping those on which I can make
a range of sized socks to fit almost any feet and selling other
working machines to buyers who want the assurance of
being able to make socks on a machine they know will work.
